Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane Preparedness What you need to know about preparing you and your pet for a Hurricane!

During the storm season, June 1st to November 30th, we have the potential for tropical storms and hurricanes to make landfall on our islands.  We encourage all pet owners to be prepared for when disaster may strike to keep themselves and their pets safe.

Have an Evacuation Plan

If you find the need to evacuate your home due to a hurricane, make arrangements to always have a safe place both you and your pet can go.  NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET WHEN EVACUATING!

While the FKSPCA shelters are not able to house owned animals during a storm, if you plan on staying in the keys during a Category 1 or 2 storm, Monroe County offers 4 Pet Friendly shelters:

  • Key West High School
  • Sugarloaf School
  • Marathon High School
  • Coral Shores High School

Have Your Supplies Ready

When disaster strikes, being unprepared can not only contribute to stress and anxiety for both you and your pet, it is much easier to forget important items that are vital when evacuating with a pet or even when staying at your own home during a storm.

Below we provide you with a downloadable Hurricane Preparedness list of the basic needs you should consider having in place at all times during storm season such as food, medications and your pet's records.  We also provide a Pet Information form to keep your pet's info in one place. For further details on how you can be prepared and have a plan in place click below for FEMA's Disaster Preparedness brochure.
