Shelter 101

As a Shelter 101 volunteer there are a multitude of jobs that can be performed every day which will greatly enhance the shelter’s efficiency in its day to day operations. Duties include housekeeping jobs such as dishes and laundry, maintenance opportunities for experienced volunteers, grounds work and general assistance to dog and cat staff.

Volunteers must complete orientation and Shelter 101 training.

 

Dog Kennel Assistant

The Dog Kennel Assistant has a variety of duties which involves making sure the animals are well cared for, comfortable and clean. This job entails feeding and watering, cleaning and sanitizing kennels, removing and replacing dogs in kennels, raking, sweeping and other housekeeping duties.

This job is an Advanced position and volunteers must go through orientation and the required dog behavior and handling training classes before starting.

 

Advanced Dog Behavior

Volunteers will work with the dogs in a positive manner following a prescribed training regimen of positive reinforcement. This behavior work will encourage and reward socially acceptable behaviors to increase adoptability and facilitate a smoother transition into a new home. The volunteer will observe behaviors, walk and sit quietly with dogs, keep diligent records and follow the positive behavior program set by the Animal Behavior Manager.

This job is an Advanced position and volunteers must go through orientation, the required dog behavior and handling training classes as well as complete the apprenticeship with the dog behavior specialist.

 

Cattery Assistant 

The Cattery Assistant has a variety of duties which involves making sure the animals are well cared for, comfortable and clean. This job entails feeding and watering the cats, cleaning and sanitizing the cat rooms, socializing and sitting with cats and other housekeeping duties.

Volunteers must complete orientation and cattery assistant training.

 

Small Animal Care 

Small Animal care assistants would be responsible for a variety of small animals including Guinea Pigs, Rabbits, Hamsters and other adoptable small animals. Duties would include cleaning, feeding and socializing.

Volunteers must complete orientation and a small animal training session.

 

Spay/Neuter Clinic Assistant 

Clinic volunteers would assist the office in paperwork preparation and the intake and owner collection of the animals. They would also aid staff members with the post operation medical procedures of the spay/neuter animals.

Volunteers must complete orientation, attend a clinic observation session and complete an interview with our Spay and Neuter Lead Technician.

 

Special Events & Fundraising 

Special Events & Fundraising volunteers help by planning, coordinating and hosting events that involve the community, creating awareness and raising donations that directly benefit the animals at our shelter. Volunteers are crucial to the success of these events.

Volunteers must complete orientation and special events training session with the Volunteer Coordinator.

 

Community Service Hours

Community Service hours are not a part of the regular volunteer program. To complete Community Service mandated hours please contact the Director of Operations directly by either calling or visiting the shelter in person.
